With the Euros just around the corner, I feel this is the right time to explain why Wolves captain Max Kilman should be in the England squad.
- Fantastic on the ball
It is clear to see Max Kilman’s futsal has helped him in the professional game, he is constantly calm on the ball even with a high-tempo press. I feel this separates him into a different category with the current England defenders for example Harry Maguire, who we have seen not be so calm on the ball.
Max can benefit Southgate’s team with his composure and being able to play in tight scenarios to keep the ball moving.
His passing can provide opportunities for England’s attackers, for example Max’s assist against West Bromwich Albion with a chipped ball over the top. Those type of passes being fed into Saka, Foden etc can provide a large amount of goals.
2. Brilliant in the air
With Kilman being 6’4, he has a good presence on the pitch and very rarely loses a header.
This attribute is key for England when playing against those tough tall strikers, it can take the pressure of England a little and allow the team to re-group when defending.
Kilman has also used his heading attributes towards goal, his first Premier League goal came against Everton in 2021 when his effort beat the current England number one, Jordan Pickford.
3. A Young Leader
When Ruben Neves moved to Al Hilal last summer, Kilman took on the responsibility of being the captain of Wolverhampton Wanderers and during this season many will agree he has adapted and grown into the role as many Wolves fans did not feel he was the right candidate.
His leadership is fantastic, consistently motivating his players and being the player who keeps his cool in the hot situations. His mindset and leadership could be vital for England, especially in those huge games.
