Whether it was down to poor finishing or good goal keeping, Wolves could probably be still playing now and not find the back of the net.
MK Dons are by far the poorest team that Wolves have played this season and it is easy to still why they are in a relegation fight this season. They appeared to leave the midfield in the changing room and their defence was full of errors.
All of which frustrates me more that Wolves did not win. It wasn’t for lack of trying with Afobe, Edwards and Henry all having good chance in the first half. But Wolves finishing, especially in the first half, was nowhere near clinical enough.
In the second half the Wolves chances kept coming, but David Martin in the Dons goal kept the Wanderers at bay with some fine saves.
Up until the final act of shooting, Wolves did play some nice football. McDonald and Price were first to everything in midfield, keeping the ball moving at speed throughout. It would have been nice to see McDonald assert himself a bit more when going forward as it was clear Wolves could push more against a weak opposition.
Dave Edwards link play in the first first was excellent and paved the way for several chances in the first half. I could ramble on for days for how much he contributes despite not being technically gifted, but his presence was missed once he was substituted with Wolves looking disjointed after his departure.
Jordan Graham had a bright home debut at Molineux. He still has a lot to learn at this level but he worked hard for the team, kept his width and gave Wolves a direct, pacy winger we’ve been crying out for since Sako left. The fans let their feeling known when he was taken off for the inconsistent Sheyi Ojo.
The defence had a solid game, keeping their concentration on the rare occasion when MK Dons threatened. They also moved the ball well during heavt periods of possession to the stretch the play.
Afobe was clearly desperate to score against his former club, and perhaps that lead him to trying too hard and fluffing his lines. He hasn’t hit the height of last season, potentially is down to the loss of creative and attacking players, but you would expect someone of his calibre to finish some of the chance he on Saturday.
This truly was a game Wolves should of and needed to win. We won’t get that many opportunities to register three points this season.
I don’t think Wolves will get relegated, but after each Saturday the top six seems further and further away. Looks like for the first time in a long time, Wolves might have to settle for mid-table mediocrity.
