Referee Micheal Salisbury awarded a hat-trick of penalties in Monday night’s game. The third, and ultimately the match-winning penalty came deep into added time to the home side after a VAR review.
Initially Salisbury allowed play to continue after a coming together of Joao Gomes and Harry Wilson. Upon the next break in play, the referee checked the pitch-side monitor where he overturned his decision. Willian successfully finished his second spot-kick of the game.
The hosts struck first with Alex Iwobi opening his account for Fulham as he side footed Antonee Robinson’s cut back in the seventh minute.
Wolves’ first chance came to in-form attacker Hwang Hee-chan on the 14th minute. A composed through ball played by Mario Lemina found his teammate, however Hwang’s shot hit the crossbar.
Matheus Cunha equalised for Wolves in the 22nd minute following a quick move played by Wolves. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde successfully beat his man picking out Wolves number 12 free at the back post to head home.
Willian restored the hosts’ lead in the 60th minute with the first penalty of the game. The referee penalised Nelson Semedo for bringing down Tom Cairney, despite the protest from fans and players alike.
Willian stepped up right footed, coolly slotting it to the right side of Jose Sa. Sending the Portuguese international the wrong way.
Wolves then had a spot-kick of their own in the 75th minute when Tim Ream cleared out Hwang after the Wolves attacker got to the ball first.
The South Korean made no mistake from the spot, using his laces to strike through the ball into the middle of the goal as he made the scores level once again.
Fulham benefitted from the final spot kick in the 94th minute, and a Willian double done the job for Marco Silva’s team.
