Goals from Moussa Diaby and Ezri Konsa were enough to seal three points for Unai Emery’s side and helped Aston Villa fight for a spot in the Champions League, taking them three points above Tottenham Hotspur.
Premier League action returned to Villa Park, the hosts continued their European push. Wolves were hunting for three points following a disappointing FA Cup defeat to EFL Championship side Coventry City.
Wolves came into the game with a heavy amount of injuries to key attacking players such as Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha to just name a couple, but Aston Villa had absences of their own including John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey.
Aston Villa had the ball in the net through Douglas Luiz, but the offside flag was raised in the eighth minute.
Emi Martinez was called into action and stopped Rayan Ait-Nouri’s shot from close range with a world class save in the 14th minute.
Ollie Watkins had an excellent chance to give the hosts the lead in the 27th minute, but the Englishman’s chipped effort struck the post and went out of play.
Villa continued their attacking threat, Pau Torres’ headed effort was claimed by Jose Sa in the 32nd minute and in a flash counter-attack Mario Lemina was found in the Villa box, but his effort was blocked by Carlos.
The hosts eventually took the lead in the 32nd minute through Moussa Diaby.
Leon Bailey’s cross deflected off Doyle into the path of Diaby, who struck the ball first time into the top corner.
After the break Wolves searched for an equaliser and had chances through Lemina and Chiwome but could not find the back of the net.
Emery’s side doubled their lead with 25 minutes left to play, Doyle lost the ball in a dangerous area and Diaby found Konsa with space on the right-hand side, his mis-hit cross was over the head of Sa and crossed the line after deflecting off the post.
Winning ways return to Villa Park, after being victorious in just two of the last six games previously at home.
Wolves’ next challenge is a trip to Turf Moor to face Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, this Tuesday for a 19:45 kick off.
Aston Villa will face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, kick off for that game is 20:15.
